What Car Insurance Does Wisconsin Require?

Every driver in Wisconsin must carry liability insurance of at least $25,000 for injury or death of one person, $50,000 for injury or death of two or more people, and $10,000 for property damage. Wisconsin also requires uninsured motorist coverage of at least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident, and policies include $1,000 of medical payments coverage per person unless you decline it in writing.

Underinsured motorist coverage is not mandatory, but your insurer has to tell you it is available. If you add it, the minimum is $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident. You also need to keep proof of insurance with you, either on paper or on your phone. Driving without insurance can lead to a forfeiture of up to $500, and after some accidents your license and registration can be suspended.

Keep in mind that these are only the legal minimums. One serious crash on Highway 64 or I-94 can cost far more than $25,000, which is why Frank usually walks New Richmond drivers through higher liability limits and the coverages that protect their own car.

Coverage Options To Talk Through With Frank

Liability pays for injuries and damage you cause to others. Collision helps repair or replace your vehicle after an accident, whoever is at fault. Comprehensive helps with things like hail, theft, fire, falling branches, and the deer collisions that are all too common on St. Croix County roads in the fall.

Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage protects you and your passengers when the other driver has little or no insurance. Medical payments helps with medical bills for you and your passengers. Optional extras such as emergency road service and rental reimbursement can make a breakdown on a January morning much easier to deal with.

If your car is financed or leased, your lender will usually require collision and comprehensive. If you drive an older vehicle you own outright, Frank can help you weigh whether those coverages are still worth what they cost.

Ways New Richmond Drivers May Save

Discount eligibility depends on your situation, but common conversations include safe-driving programs like Drive Safe & Save™, the Steer Clear® program for drivers under 25, good student considerations, and having more than one vehicle on your policy.

Many families also bundle their car with homeowners insurance, condo insurance or renters insurance. Ask Frank to compare a bundled quote with what you pay today. If you also ride, motorcycle insurance can be reviewed in the same appointment.

Auto Insurance FAQs

Do I need car insurance if I live in Wisconsin but work in Minnesota?

Yes. Your car needs to meet the insurance rules of the state where it is registered and garaged. Frank's office is licensed in both Wisconsin and Minnesota, so commuters between New Richmond, Hudson and the Twin Cities can get help with either state's requirements.

Is a deer collision covered?

Hitting a deer is usually covered under comprehensive, not collision. If you only carry liability, damage to your own car from a deer strike would not be covered.

When should I add my teen driver?

Call the office as soon as your teen gets a learner's permit or license. Frank can explain how adding a young driver affects your premium and whether programs like Steer Clear® may help.
